The Institute for Development and Peace (INEF) is one of four institutes of the Faculty of Social Sciences of the University of Duisburg-Essen. INEF was established in 1990 amongst others to supplement the work of the Development and Peace Foundation (sef:) with scholarly analyses. The sef: was already founded in 1986 at the initiative of former German Chancellor Willy Brandt and remains one of our closest co-operating partners.
The "unique selling point"of INEF is its joint focus on the issue areas of development and peace, especially looking at questions at the interface of both areas. In its work, INEF combines basic with applied research and public policy consulting. Since 2018, INEF’s research programme is entitled "Ordering and Responsibility in the Shadow of Hierarchies" and will focus primarily on three areas:
Transnational Governance and the Responsibility of Private Actors
Development Partnerships in Times of SDGs
Intervention, Resistance and the Disruption of Political Orders
In order to conduct in-depth research on selected research questions, we conduct bigger and smaller third-party funded research projects. In its 25 years of existence INEF can look back on a long list of completed projects as well as a broad spectrum of national and international research partners. Amongst others, the Seventh Framework Programme for Research and Technological Development (FP7) of the EU, the German Ministry for Economic Cooperation and Development (BMZ), the German Foundation for Peace Research (DSF), the Friedrich Ebert Foundation (FES), the Hans Böckler Foundation (HBS), the Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit (GIZ), the Institut für Auslandsbeziehungen (ifa), the Mercator Research Centre Ruhr (MERCUR) or the Volkswagen Foundation have been funding our projects. In addition, INEF also collaborates with non-governmental organizations (NGOs).
Our publications are the most visible results of our research. Besides books and articles published by our team members three publication series of INEF have been established over the years, which constitute a key aspect of our work. With the working paper series "INEF Report", issued several times per year, INEF tries to shape the academic discourse and the political debates on development and peace. Together with the Peace and Development Foundation (sef:), INEF has issued editions of "Global Trends" every two or three years. This book series analyses complex global developments and data with respect to peace, world order and sustainable development, and presents them - combined with policy advice - in an accessible form. In addition, INEF co-edits the annual "Peace Report" in collaboration with four other peace research institutes. The articles by German and international researchers not only provide analyses but also make specific recommendations to policy-makers. Global Trends and Peace Report do not only aim at reaching scientific experts but also a broader readership in politics, society and economy.
Over the years INEF has established a viable network of co-operating partners. As far as applied research and public policy consulting is concerned, the collaboration with the sef: and the Working Group on Peace and Development (Frient) as well as with the German Platform for Peaceful Conflict Management features quite prominently. With respect to research and graduate training the Käte Hamburger Kolleg / Centre for Global Cooperation Research (KHK/GCR21) of the University Duisburg-Essen, the UAR Graduate Centre for Development Studies and the Institute of Development Research and Development Policy (IEE), both based at the Ruhr University Bochum, play a major role among our academic partners.
Beyond our research we try to contribute regularly to the degree programmes of the Institute for Political Science at the Faculty of Social Sciences. This comprises in particular teaching courses in the MA programme "International Relations and Development Policy" (MA IBEP).
